What to Wear for Your Maternity Photo Session - Let Me Be Your Guide

One of the biggest worries mums share with me before their maternity photo session is what to wear — and it’s completely understandable. Studio maternity photos are beautifully simple and focused, which means what you wear plays an important role in the overall look and feel of your images.
My studio sessions are designed to be calm, timeless, and centred around you, and your outfit should support that — never distract from it. With a little gentle guidance (and a lovely wardrobe option waiting for you), choosing what to wear can feel easy and stress-free.
Why Studio Maternity Sessions Are Different
In a studio setting, everything is intentionally minimal — soft light, neutral backdrops, and a peaceful environment. This allows the focus to remain on your bump, your connection, and this special moment in your journey.
Because studio images are so timeless, simple and considered outfit choices photograph beautifully and ensure your images won’t date over time.

Comfort Is Always the Priority
Above all else, I want you to feel comfortable. Soft fabrics, gentle stretch, and breathable materials are ideal for studio maternity sessions, allowing you to move, sit, and pose comfortably throughout your time with me.
When you’re at ease, your posture relaxes, your expression softens, and the images naturally feel more flattering and authentic.
Flattering Styles That Work Beautifully in the Studio
Certain styles work especially well in a studio environment:
Flowing dresses that softly skim over your bump
Fitted maternity gowns that gently highlight your shape
High-waisted or empire-line styles that define just above the bump
Simple, elegant silhouettes without heavy embellishment
These styles create clean lines and soft shapes that photograph beautifully under studio lighting.

Neutral Colours for a Timeless Look
I always recommend soft, neutral tones for studio maternity photos. Creams, warm beiges, soft browns, muted blushes, gentle greys, and earthy tones reflect light beautifully and complement the calm feel of the studio.
Very bright colours, bold patterns, and large logos can distract from the emotion of the image and take attention away from you, so it’s best to keep things simple and understated.
My Client Wardrobe: One Less Thing to Worry About
To make things even easier, I have a beautiful client wardrobe available for mums to choose from. Each piece has been carefully selected specifically for studio maternity photography, with comfort, fit, and timeless style in mind.
Choosing a dress from my client wardrobe means:
No last-minute shopping
No worrying about what photographs well
A gown that’s designed to flatter your bump and suit the studio setting
Many mums find this takes away a huge amount of stress and allows them to fully relax and enjoy the experience.

Shoes, Accessories, and the Little Details
In studio sessions, shoes are rarely needed, keeping the look soft and natural. When accessories are included, I recommend keeping them minimal — delicate jewellery, subtle textures, and gentle layers work beautifully.
The aim is always to enhance the image, not overpower it.
A Gentle Reminder Before Your Session
You don’t need to follow trends. You don’t need to buy something new. You don’t need to worry about getting it “right.”
Between gentle guidance and my carefully curated client wardrobe, everything is in place for you to feel comfortable, confident, and supported.
Your studio maternity session is a quiet moment to pause and celebrate this chapter — and I’m here to take care of the rest.
