When Is the Best Time to Book Maternity Photos?

One of the most common questions I’m asked is “When should I book my maternity photos?” It’s a lovely question, and an important one — because timing plays a big part in creating images where you feel comfortable, confident, and truly yourself.

While every pregnancy is different, there is a sweet spot that tends to work beautifully for most mums. Here’s a gentle guide to help you decide what’s right for you.

The Ideal Time for Maternity Photos

For most expectant mums, the best time to photograph your maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks.

At this stage:

  • Your bump is beautifully rounded and clearly visible

  • You’re often still feeling comfortable enough to move and pose gently

  • Swelling and fatigue are usually more manageable than later in pregnancy

This window allows us to create soft, elegant images without you feeling rushed or uncomfortable — which is always my priority.

Why Earlier Is Often Better Than Later

Many mums assume they should wait until the very end of pregnancy, but later weeks can be unpredictable. Energy levels may dip, movement can feel more restricted, and babies sometimes arrive earlier than expected.

By scheduling your session a little earlier, we allow space for flexibility and peace of mind — knowing your photos are safely captured without any last-minute stress.

What If This Isn’t Your First Pregnancy?

If this isn’t your first pregnancy, you may find that your bump shows a little earlier. In these cases, I often recommend booking closer to the earlier end of the 28–34 week window.

This also works well if you’re including older children in your session, as it helps keep everything relaxed and enjoyable for everyone involved.

When Should You Book Your Session?

I recommend booking your maternity session as soon as you feel comfortable — often after your 20-week scan. This helps secure availability and gives us plenty of time to plan your session thoughtfully.

Booking early also allows time to discuss styling, access the client wardrobe if you wish, and choose a date that suits you without feeling rushed.

What If You Feel Unsure or Are Running Late?

If you’re reading this and feel you may already be past the “ideal” window, please don’t worry. Every pregnancy is unique, and beautiful images can still be created later on.

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to chat through your individual situation and offer gentle guidance on the best timing for you.

A Thought to Leave You With

There’s no such thing as the perfect moment — only the moment you’re in right now.

Maternity photos aren’t about waiting until everything feels just right. They’re about honouring your journey, your body, and the life you’re growing.

If you’re considering booking a maternity session and aren’t sure where to start, I’d love to guide you through it.
