Cake Smash Photoshoots: Everything Parents Need to Know

Your baby’s first birthday is such a milestone — and it always seems to arrive quicker than expected. A cake smash photoshoot is a beautiful way to celebrate this moment, capturing your little one’s personality just as it’s beginning to shine through.

If you’re wondering what a cake smash session involves, how it works, or whether it’s right for your baby, I’ve put together everything you need to know to help you feel relaxed and confident before booking.

When to Book Your Cake Smash Session

Cake smash sessions are usually held when babies are around 10–11 months old. This timing allows plenty of flexibility if you’d like to use the images for birthday invitations or display them at a first birthday celebration.

Booking a little earlier also ensures availability and gives us time to plan your session without any rush. If you’re unsure about timing, I’m always happy to guide you based on your plans.

What a Cake Smash Session Is Really Like

Every baby is wonderfully different — and cake smash sessions are designed to reflect that. Some little ones dive straight in, others prefer to explore slowly, and some would rather poke the cake than eat it. All of this is completely normal and part of the experience.

Sessions are calm, baby-led, and unhurried. I allow plenty of time for your baby to settle, explore, and enjoy themselves in their own way. There’s no pressure for them to “perform” — the sweetest moments often happen naturally.

Styling and Setups: Simple, Timeless, and Thoughtfully Designed

I keep cake smash setups soft, neutral, and timeless so the focus stays on your baby rather than busy props or strong colours. Simple backdrops and carefully chosen details help create images that won’t date as trends change.

I’ll guide you on outfit choices that photograph beautifully and feel comfortable for your baby. Soft fabrics and simple designs tend to work best, allowing little expressions and movements to shine through.

Do I Need to Bring the Cake?

I’ll discuss all of this with you during the planning stage so everything feels straightforward and stress-free. Whether you choose to bring a cake or have one arranged, I’ll guide you on size, colour, and style so it photographs beautifully and complements the session.

If your baby has allergies or sensitivities, please let me know — your little one’s safety and comfort always come first.

What If My Baby Doesn’t Like the Cake?

This is one of the most common worries — and something I reassure parents about all the time. Not every baby enjoys cake, and that’s absolutely fine.

A cake smash session isn’t about how much cake your baby eats. It’s about capturing expressions, curiosity, tiny hands, and those wonderfully honest reactions that make this age so special. Whether your baby enthusiastically smashes or gently observes, we’ll still create beautiful images.

After the Session: Carefully Finished, Beautiful Memories

After your session, I carefully select and hand-edit your images in my signature soft, natural style. Your gallery will include a variety of moments — from clean, classic portraits to joyful, messy details — giving you a full story of this milestone.

These photographs often become some of a family’s most treasured keepsakes, capturing a time that’s impossible to recreate.

A Gentle Reminder

Your baby doesn’t need to do anything a certain way. They don’t need to smile on cue. They don’t need to love the cake.

They simply need to be themselves.

A cake smash session is a relaxed, joyful way to celebrate your baby just as they are, right now — before this stage slips quietly into the next.

If you’re considering a cake smash photoshoot and have questions, I’m always here to help guide you.
